5 Ways to De-stress at the Office

Approximately a quarter of employees say that their job is the number one stress factor in their lives.

Here are 5 ways to de-stress and relieve some tension at the office.

1. Breathe

Breathing exercises provide many benefits such as increasing blood flow, improving mental alertness, and reducing tension. Here’s an exercise you can perform while sitting at your desk:

Relax. Slowly inhale through your nose and allow your abdomen to expand outward. Hold for a few comfortable seconds. Now, slowly exhale through your mouth. Repeat as many times you need.

2. Drink Some Tea

Studies show that tea helps reduce the stress hormone cortisol with theanine. Theanine is an amino acid commonly found in tea which has been shown to reduce mental and physical stress by producing feelings of relaxation. There are approximately 1500 different varieties of tea in the world. I’m sure you’ll find one that suits your taste. Start drinking tea on a regular basis to reduce stress!

3. Listen to Relaxing Music

Whenever you are feeling stressed at work, block out your co-workers by putting your headphones on and listening to some relaxing music.

4. Go for a Walk

Go for a walk during lunch to de-stress and unwind. If you are stressed out to begin with, the random thoughts and end of the world scenarios you create in your head while you sit at your desk will increase your stress. Step away from the office for a bit to free your mind and restore the chemical balance within your body.

5. Go Out for Lunch

You can’t sit at your desk from 9AM-5PM five days a week or else you’ll lose your mind. Go out for lunch once in awhile to de-stress. However, go out for lunch too much, and you’ll stress out about the lack of money in your bank account! Find balance. Be careful!
